About Museums in Doha (Qatar)

Qatar has a strong history and its own outstanding culture. And to preserve its history and cultural heritage, many museums and art galleries are built in Qatar. These museums exhibit Islamic history, the history of the Arab States of Persian Gulf. They also outline the past, present and future ambitions of Qatar. Out of these many museums, some of the best are listed below

Doha Museums

  1. Museum of Islamic Art The museum is located on an island near the dhow harbor. Its architecture is designed by I. M. Pei. The museum has five stories and has both permanent and temporary galleries. It also houses a library, a café, a restaurant, a gift shop and a theatre. It is the first museum to display Islamic art of over 14 centuries of 3 continents in the Arab States of Persian Gulf. Its collection includes ancient Islamic textiles, jewelry, wood work, ceramics and glass.

  2. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani opened this museum in 1998 in Al Rayyan municipality in Qatar. It is located 20 km west of Doha. It comprises of 3 building built over 530,000 metre square of area. It houses Qatar’s cultural artwork and traditional artifacts. Its 15 halls accommodate more than 15,000 artifacts in total, divided in 4 categories, personally collected in 50 years by Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani. These categories are I. Islamic Art II.   3. Msheireb Museums In these museums, the history of heritage houses of Msheireb Downtown Doha, is stored. These museums are located in the oldest part of Doha. The museum has restored the historic four houses named I. Bin Jelmood House II. Company House III. Mohammed Bin Jassim House IV. Radwani House

  4. Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art It was developed in 2010 and is considered one of the most valuable cultural attraction. It shows the perspective of Arabs on contemporary and modern art. It also promotes creativity and new ideas. The museum is 5,500 square meter in area and is situated in Doha’s Educational City. Its collection is one of the largest Arab produced sculptures and paintings.

  5. Fire Station Artist in Residence Its building was built in 1982 for civil defense but is now used for art galleries. It is a project led by Ibrahim Al Jaidah, a renowned architect of Qatar. It is a platform for artists to take them at a new level. It offers art programs

  6. Msheireb Enrichment Centre It is seen as a landmark showcasing Qatar’s past and its future ambitions. It is a project of Msheireb Properties. It houses some historical artifacts and antique work of Qatar. It displays the glorious pat of Qatar and its journey of success and accomlishments. It narrates the distinct architecture of Qatar and its rich heritage.

  7. National Museum of Qatar It is currently under construction. It is designed to have galleries addressing three interrelated major themes. It will showcase the history of the Persian Gulf and its deserts. Its collection is said to have 8,000 objects. The above were some of the museums in Qatar.
